Today's guest writer is Eddie Corvera, who also goes by EMC II. Eddie is a writer and poet, and we have a lot in common. Same town and we both are naturally very self-deprecating (we had a nice chat about this before he submitted his letter).
Here is a quick summary of our exchange.
Eddie: I’ve never been a fan of self love lol I’m more of a self loathing type, would letters on the more pessimistic snarky side be appropriate?
Me: I'm actually a master of self deprecation, so I get it. I suppose you could do something like "it's ok that you don't like 70% of people. Focus on the upper 30% and have a party.” Or "you're not bad. Not great, but not bad." And then in caption I can provide context. I'm actually not naturally optimistic. I just try to do the self love thing because it's important and it's a challenge.
/End scene
Now, I mention this anecdote because the idea of Self Love can get kind of hairy. Look. YOU ARE NOT BROKEN IF SELF LOVE IS HARD TO FIND. It's supposed to be a challenge; people are inherently flawed. Yet it's important to try to find the lovable even in the most unseemly places. It's a scavenger hunt sometimes, but if you seek, you will find. And really, it's ok if your self love letters don't look like mine. We are all different. But we all need the same thing: the ability to accept who we are.
And with that introduction, here is EMC II’s letter of encouragement.
---
Dear Self,
You’re a coward.
Life is too short to not:
Say what you feel, mean what you say, and above all else be braver than the person you were yesterday.
Sincerely, Me
EMC II

More information about EMC II:
1.) Favorite Quote:
It’s not about the money, it’s about sending a message. — The Dark Knight, 2008
2.) Favorite Book:
Picking a favorite book is like trying to pick a favorite amongst your children; everyone has an actual favorite they just prefer not to say it out loud and upset anyone. My favorite book tends to be whatever I’m reading at the moment, in this case it’s Foundation by Issac Asimov (I’m somewhat behind on literature in sci-fi so I’m trying to catch up).
3.) What I wanted to be when I was a kid:
Animator for Disney Pixar, Doctor/Surgeon
4.) Spirit Animal:
I wouldn’t be fulfilling the writerly cliche if I didn’t say cats. There’s just something about being aggressively passive-aggressive and irreverent towards everything and everyone around them that I deeply connect with. That and I’ve noticed they have a tendency to eat when they’re anxious or stressed which I also relate to.
